Eco Champions

We have been awarded Eco-Green Flag Status!
Well done to all of the Eco-Team for helping to achieve this!

Following our previous bronze and silver awards, this year Athelstan Primary school is aiming to achieve the Eco-Green Flag status. The Eco-schools Green Flag is awarded to schools with high achievement in their programme. It is a recognised and respected eco-label for environmental education and performance. The whole school has made a concerted effort to be eco-friendly.

Our Eco warriors have worked together to create the Eco-code to be followed in school. They have shared and displayed this code in all classes and we are striving to achieve and follow it.
A –always put litter in the bin.
T – turn off the lights to save energy.
H – helping others to be Eco-friendly.
E – everybody plays their role.
L – look after our garden and wildlife.
S – save electricity and water.
T – to respect the earth.
A – always care for animals and plants.
N – never forget to be Eco- friendly.

At the beginning of our project we completed an environmental review to find the areas we need to improve upon. Following the environmental review the children chose 4 areas to focus on. These were; Litter, Healthy Living, Global Citizenship and Biodiversity
Here are some of the things we have been doing;

Litter:

Creating and putting up posters around school to promote recycling and not dropping litter.
The Eco-warriors delivered an assembly about litter and recycling.
The Eco-warriors have completed termly litter picks and collected data on the amount.
Whole school assembly and workshops from Power Down Pete.
The Eco-warriors put recycling and waste stickers on classroom bins.

Healthy Living:

The whole school took part in Walk to school week. Eco-warriors promoted this and collected data.
The whole participated in PE week covering a range of sports.
Some year groups had a skipping workshop.
Y6 completed Bikeability.
EYFS have been involved in a 6 week play-trition programme.
Classes took part in a mile run for Sport relief
EYFS children participated in a Balance bike workshop.

Global Citizenship:

Y6 children visited London, including the houses of parliament.
KS2 have completed Fairtrade projects looking at chocolate and bananas.
Some year groups visited Bradford to look at places of worship.
The school had a visit from the Massai warriors.
We had a European language day. Children learnt Spanish and flamenco dancing.
KS2 studied the topic India, taking part in bollywood dancing and visiting an Indian restaurant.

Biodiversity:

KS1 are completing a farm to fork topic looking at the journey of the food we eat.
A Year 1,2 & 3 Gardening club is taking place to help maintain the orchard and school grounds.
Year 5/6 visited Stocksbridge where they learnt all about vegetables and how they are grown.
All years regularly visit the orchard completing a range of activities.
Whole school Science Week – Children looked at and learnt about bees.
