To Be The Best That We Can Be

Training & Development

We are always looking at ways in which our teaching and learning can be improved as we strive towards achieving ‘Outstanding’. Our attitude remains the same across all the subject areas. As part of the School Sport Premium we have taken the opportunity to ensure the money is well spent and is sustainable. We believe by training all staff to have a nationally recognised qualification in a sporting area of their choice, we are ensuring that we get the very best physical education for our children.

Our staff are already proactive and working hard towards their qualification.  As each member of staff becomes qualified they will be responsible for cascading their expertise to the rest of their colleagues through dedicated staff meeting time. They will observe others teaching their sport and help and support staff in ensuring that high quality PE is being taught across all year groups and across a range of sports. We will keep you informed as staff achieve their official qualification/ training.

Mrs Barton- Staff Meeting

Mrs Barton's staff meeting was particularly exciting as it was teaching us all a whole new sport...Fencing. Mrs Barton has completed the Go Fence coaching course which has not only meant that she is a qualified fencing coach but we also received the Go Fence bag of equipment. This has enabled an after school club to run as well as staff being able to use the fencing equipment in class. We were shown the equipment and talked through the correct terminology to use with the children. We learnt the rules fencing and key safety teaching points. We learnt how to teach the skills of fencing in a series of lessons. We had lots of fun playing various games but I think all staff will agree that the best bit was getting to joust!

Miss Heeley- Staff Meeting

Miss Heeley led an active cricket session to all teaching staff. She talked through tips and shared ideas and resources that she had learnt during her cricket coaching course. We learnt ways to alter our teaching based on the range of ability within our classes. Miss Heeley also discussed ideas that she had already put into practise with her own class and involved all staff in a series of practical cricket skill based activities.

Miss Pugh-Staff Meeting

Miss Pugh shared her swimming coaching experience with staff following her 2 day course. She talked about strategies to use with both non swimmers and those more experienced. It was handy to know exactly how to use the resource pack she acquired in practise. Miss Pugh will now use her qualification to teach our Year 1 and Year 4 children swimming from September 2015.

Wheelchair Basketball

Adrian Kennedy from Hoop Stars basketball gave the staff an informative and fun insight into wheelchair basketball.  Being placed in a chair and having your legs restrained so that there is no movement allowed is not easy to get used to.  Using only your upper body to manoeuvre the wheelchair is very tough physically, but, the wheelchairs are very agile.  We had a fun time playing against each other and now have a deeper understanding of the barriers needed to be overcome for our children with physical difficulties.

Following a staff survey Gym came to light as any area many of our staff would like to improve upon. Therefore Adam Palmer from Premier Sport has delivered Gym CPD to several members of staff this acedemic year so far. The staff have found it to be a worthwhile experience. Adam will begin work with the Year 1 children in the summer term deliveriing the Multi Skills programme which has worked well in previous years.
