Phonics in Puddles

In Puddles we use Foundation for Phonics by Little Wandle Letters and Sounds to support our teaching of the aspects needed to develop the children's early phonics and reading skills. Alongside a rich and varied curriculum, well chosen resources and dedicated individual, group and class teaching, we deliver the aspects set out by Foundations for Phonics in a consistent and repetitive manner. This is to ensure our children have the skills they need to progress into Sunshine's and continue their phonics journey.
Foundations for Phonics contributes to the provision for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’ (DfE, 2020)1 ; it should sit alongside a stimulating language-rich provision. (Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised, 2021).
Foundations for Phonics sets out the provision that should be in place to ensure children are well prepared to begin grapheme–phoneme correspondence and blending at the start of Reception. The provision should include a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences. (Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised, 2021)
The most important aspects of Foundations for Phonics to develop in the nursery are:
• sharing high-quality stories and poems with children
• learning a range of nursery rhymes and action rhymes
• activities that develop focused listening and attention, including oral blending
• attention to high-quality language with children
