To Be The Best That We Can Be

School Values

Athelstan's Aims and Vision

To be the best that we can be

We BEGIN

At Athelstan Primary School, our curriculum and ethos are driven by five core principles:

  • Belonging (Culture and Community)

At Athelstan Primary School, we ensure every child feels safe, valued and part of our community.  We focus on nurturing a growth mindset where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, helping children build confidence and resilience. Through a strong partnership between home and school, children feel supported to take risks and develop the resilience and joy for learning that sets the foundation for lifelong success.

  • Excellence (Striving for the highest quality)

At Athelstan we aim for all our children ‘To be the best that they can be’, where they view challenges as opportunities to learn rather than obstacles. We promote strong foundations in core knowledge and skills, alongside a commitment to high-quality work and presentation. Children are encouraged to take pride in their achievements and persevere through challenge.

  • Growth (Continuous improvement)

We promote a culture of continuous improvement, where children develop resilience, independence and a genuine love of learning. Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, alongside strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, enabling pupils to access learning with confidence. Through high-quality modelling and shared writing pupils are supported to develop as confident, capable writers who understand how to craft and improve their work. By encouraging reflection and a positive attitude towards challenge, we support pupils to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

  • Independence (Developing confident, self-directed learners)

At Athelstan Primary School, we aim to develop pupils who are confident, independent learners, equipped with the skills they need for the next stage of their education and beyond. Our curriculum is carefully structured to build secure knowledge and understanding, while also encouraging children to take increasing ownership of their learning. Through effective scaffolding and adaptive teaching, we support all pupils to access the curriculum successfully, gradually removing support so that children can work with greater independence.

We encourage pupils to approach challenges with confidence, think critically and take responsibility for their learning. By promoting independence in both academic and personal development, we prepare children to be resilient, resourceful and ready for the transition to secondary school.

  • Nurture (Supporting the whole child)

At Athelstan Primary School, we recognise the importance of nurturing the whole child. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive environment where every pupil feels cared for, understood and valued. Strong relationships between staff and pupils are at the heart of our school, enabling children to feel secure and ready to learn.

We work closely with families and the wider community to ensure that all pupils receive the support they need to thrive. Through a consistent and caring approach, we support children’s emotional wellbeing alongside their academic development. By fostering empathy, trust and positive relationships, we help children to develop the confidence and resilience needed to succeed both in school and beyond.

As well as these aims, at Athelstan we are committed to promoting British Values. To find out more about how we do this in our school, visit the British Values page of our website accessible from the Key Information tab.

In every classroom you will find a child friendly version of our aims. The children work towards the school aims to become star of the day.
