To Be The Best That We Can Be
Subject Lead: Mrs J Whitehead and Mrs L Robin
Mrs J Whitehead and Mrs L Robin are the PSHE and RSHE Leads at Athelstan Primary School. They work to ensure that children throughout the school develop their understanding, knowledge and skills to live a healthy, positive and safe life. Working closely with staff, they aim to deliver an engaging and inclusive PSHE and RSHE curriculum, which puts our children at the heart of it. We ensure our curriculum is relevant and current and meets the needs of our children both educationally and emotionally, ensuring our children's wellbeing is fully supported.
VISION AND INTENT
Personal, Social, Health and Economic and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (PSHE and RSHE) is the foundation to everything we do at Athelstan Primary School. It is an essential tool to enabling our pupils to stay safe, make healthy choices throughout their lives and navigate life opportunities. It is fundamental to equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills that enable them to make positive and healthy choices throughout their lives. PSHE and RSHE is essential to ensuring our pupils learn to have a deeper understanding of themselves, their emotions, the choices they have throughout life and the feelings and emotions of others. Through thorough and detailed teaching of PSHE and RSHE, which is current and representative to what our pupils need, our pupils gain the detailed knowledge they need to fulfil a happy and fulfilled life, they also gain the vital skills in order to help them to navigate the world in which they live, skills which enable them to be self-aware, aware of others and allow them to have positive and happy relationships.
At Athelstan, our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is built on a spiral approach, whereby the children’s understanding and skills are built upon each year. We believe that exposure to consistent, open-ended discussions, explicit teaching and an inclusive environment will allow for all our pupils to gain the relevant knowledge and skills they will need to navigate their own lives, in a positive and happy way. PSHE and RSHE are taught in a way which enable all of our pupils to feel safe and secure and know that their feelings, experiences and thoughts can be shared in a trusted, non-judgemental way. Our pupils take part in a variety of activities which are made up of practical activities, discussions, debates, case studies and paper-based tasks. These vital activities allow all our pupils to safety explore their own feelings, thoughts and questions about themselves and the world around them. We ensure through thorough leadership that our curriculum meets the current needs of all of pupils at Athelstan Primary School. It has strong links to PREVENT and ensures consistent expose to the 9 Protected Characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
We are members of the PSHE Association and use their comprehensive planning to support our pupils in KS1 and KS2.
In Early Years, we use the Early Years Foundation Stage and Twinkl Life to support our children in Nursery and Reception.
