GOVERNORS' STATEMENT

The Governing Body of Athelstan Primary School is committed to supporting the Headteacher, staff, pupils, and wider community in achieving the very best outcomes for all children. Our core focus remains on ensuring high standards of education, effective leadership, and a safe, inclusive environment in which every pupil can thrive.

 

We are committed to ensuring Athelstan Primary School provides the best possible education and care for every child, preparing them for success both within school and beyond.

 

As governors, we will continue to visit the school regularly, attend training, and engage with pupils, staff, and families to ensure our work reflects the needs of the whole school community.

 

 

Our Key Priorities for the Year Ahead

 

1. Leadership and Management

  • Provide robust challenge and support to the Headteacher and senior leadership team.
  • Monitor school improvement plans and hold leaders to account for measurable impact.
  • Ensure governance remains transparent, strategic, and focused on outcomes.

2. Safeguarding and Wellbeing

  • Maintain the highest standards of safeguarding practice in line with statutory requirements.
  • Monitor staff training and safeguarding compliance.
  • Champion initiatives that support mental health and wellbeing for pupils and staff.

3. Raising Standards in Teaching and Learning

  • Monitor pupil progress and attainment across all year groups, with a particular focus on reading, writing, and maths.
  • Support staff in implementing evidence-based strategies to narrow attainment gaps and accelerate progress for disadvantaged pupils.
  • Ensure the curriculum is broad, balanced, and enriched with opportunities for creativity, sport, and cultural experiences.

4. Finance and Resources

  • Oversee the school budget to ensure spending decisions are sustainable and directly benefit pupils.
  • Support the effective use of Pupil Premium and other additional funding streams.
  • Monitor the condition and development of the school site to ensure a safe and stimulating learning environment.

5. Community and Parental Engagement

  • Strengthen links between the school and parents/carers, ensuring effective two-way communication.
  • Actively seek feedback from pupils, parents, and staff to inform decision-making.
  • Promote Athelstan Primary as a welcoming and inclusive community school.
